In 2020, Microsoft announced the next versions of on-premises servers such as Exchange Server, SharePoint, Skype for Business, and Project server would be available in the second half of 2021. These new versions would require a subscription to get support, product, and security updates.
However, instead of rolling out in 2021 or 2022 as expected, the next on-premises release of Exchange Server is not coming until 2025, Microsoft announced in June 2022.
In the meanwhile, plans are to offer more new features for Exchange Server 2019 over the coming time until the moment of the new release.
What will change when the new Exchange Server version launches?
Microsoft will support Exchange 2016 and 2019 until October 14, 2025. After this date, only the next version of Exchange Server will be supported. This new version will include several features not available in previous versions.
These features include:
- New and improved Outlook on the web
- Better security, performance, and scalability
- An updated architecture
- Integration with SharePoint Server and OneDrive
- New and updated messaging policy and compliance features
Why didn’t the updated Exchange Server launch in 2021 as planned?
The short answer is security. In March 2021, Microsoft confronted state-sponsored threat actors targeting on-premises Exchange Servers. During this time, they released numerous out-of-band security and cumulative updates.
Requirements
This new version of Exchange Server will require Server and CAL licenses and will be accessible only to customers with Software Assurance. It will also be part of the Modern Lifecycle Policy. More details on naming, features, requirements, and pricing will be available in the first half of 2024.
